Exploring York

Being so centrally located, you won't need a car to explore York city centre.  You can simply leave County House and walk 2-3 minutes, passing the city wall, entering the charming historical city through Monk Bar to Goodramgate, with its medieval buildings, shops, old world pubs, cafes and restaurants.

At the first junction of Goodramgate, to the right, you'll find College Street leading to the Minster, just a 5-6 minute walk from the apartment.  On your way you'll be able to admire the row of picturesque medieval houses overlooking the green - a great place to sit and look at the Minster or people watch.

Further along Goodramgate you will reach Lady Row, the white medieval houses which are the oldest surviving row of houses in the city, dating from 1316.  If you enjoyed the Gentleman Jack series, you can visit the church where lesbian and diarist, Anne Lister, took Holy Communion with her partner, Ann Walker, as an affirmation of their lesbian relationship - this is commemorated with a blue plaque, the first to be encircled with a Pride rainbow.  Moving further along you'll reach Kings Square, a busy area with a great buzz, with its shops, pubs, restaurants and street performers entertaining visitors.  You can learn all about York's strong connection to chocolate by taking a tour at the York Chocolate Story.  Here too is The Shambles, famous for its narrow cobbled street with quaint shops - a very popular location for visitors.  You'll be able to try a roast dinner in a Yorkshire pudding at The York Roast Co. or The Yorkshire Pudding shop as it's often fondly known as - an extremely popular food option!

Beyond Goodramgate, lies the Shambles Market, an historic outdoor market selling an array of York mementoes and interesting items. There's an abundance of boutiques and larger shops within beautiful buildings and, being so close, it's easy to buy your items and take them back to the apartment, before setting out again!  On Davygate you can enjoy a 'Fat Rascal' at the renowned Betty's Cafe Tea Rooms!  Fancy learning about York's Viking heritage? A trip to the award winning Jorvik Viking Centre is a must for all ages.

Feeling adventurous?  It's easy to explore the small streets, admiring the architecture, historic buildings as well as going off the beaten track and discovering small alleyways leading to hidden gems such as Barley Hall or different areas of the city.  Wander down to the River Ouse to take a cruise on City Cruises York or hire one of their self-drive boats and meander down the river at your own pace, a popular pastime for our children!  A visit to the Castle Museum provides an opportunity to explore more than 400 years of York's history.  A walk around the York City Walls is a great way to view different parts of York with good viewpoints and can be started near to the apartment at Monk Bar.  A little further away but within walking distance and well worth a visit is the National Railway Museum which tells the story of rail transport in Britain and how it has impacted society.

These are just a few of York's many attractions that are just a stroll away - we really are in an ideal spot to enjoy all that York has to offer.  We feel very lucky to have an apartment in such a perfect part of this wonderful city and we're sure you'll enjoy it too.
